# WE ARE HAPPY TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS
Questions & Answers
Can I, as a private individual, buy an urn directly from you?
Yes. We primarily sell our urns to private customers. You can easily order through our online shop, and we will deliver your urn directly to you or to your funeral director. We also collaborate with funeral homes, so you can also order our urns through your funeral director. Simply ask your funeral director about our urns, and we will handle the communication with them for you.
Is it even legal to buy an urn without a funeral director?
Yes. Everyone has the right to choose which urn is used for their own funeral or the funeral of a loved one, and where that urn comes from. The burial laws of the German federal states stipulate how crematoria and funeral directors must handle a person's mortal remains, including ashes. The choice of urn is not affected by these laws.
Are your urns compatible with all types of burial?
Our urns can be used for various types of burial in conjunction with cremation.
Our urns are suitable for burial in an urn grave in a cemetery, for interment in a columbarium, and for burial in woodland cemeteries. Certification may be required for the latter. Our River Stones urn, made of laurel wood, is already certified for use in woodland cemeteries.
Are the urns approved for burial in a FriedWald (forest cemetery)?
Yes. Our River Stones urn made of laurel wood is certified for the more than 80 FriedWald locations in Germany and can also be buried in other forest cemeteries.
Can urns be individually designed or engraved?
We are happy to accommodate your individual wishes. Currently, we do not have an automated way to engrave our urns. Therefore, please contact us and we will be happy to discuss the options with you.
Can I have an urn delivered to my home before the burial?
Yes. There's nothing wrong with having an empty urn delivered to your home before the ashes are placed inside. This way, you can develop a connection with the urn before it becomes the final resting place of your loved one. Once the ashes of a deceased person have been placed in the urn, it is no longer permitted to keep it at home in Germany. This is allowed in Austria and Switzerland. Only your funeral director is authorized to store the ashes in Germany.
Crafted Urns also offers very small models of our River Stones urns, which can be ordered in addition to the urn containing the ashes and kept at home, perhaps with a lock of hair or another personal memento. This allows you to maintain a connection to your loved one's urn in your own home.
How do I choose the right size urn?
The size depends on the deceased's body weight prior to cremation. As a guideline, approximately 30 cubic centimeters of volume (0.03 liters) are required per kilogram of body weight. For a person weighing 70 kg, this corresponds to approximately 2.1 liters of volume. We would be happy to assist you in choosing the right size.
