"Creating urns is the essence of what I have been doing for 20 years." (Jessica Maria Toliver)
# Building the Last House with Beauty
Their simple aesthetic lies in the imperfect, rough, and archaic, making the objects unique: T'URN urns are made from pulp, a malleable material consisting of pure cotton fibers, water, binders, and natural pigments such as earth, charcoal, sand, or stones.
The base of T'URN urns is made of fine cotton fibers, also known as linters. These are used by the Hahnemühle manufacturer to create pure cotton papers for the highest artistic demands.
The soft yet stable fibers for T'URN represent sustainability and climate and resource protection: Jessica uses the fine and valuable fibers that adhere to the cotton seeds for a second life, while the well-known long fibers of the cotton blossom are used for textiles. The pulp then dries and develops its final color. After the pulp dries, the urn lid is fitted onto the turned linden wood shell. An algae-based emulsion from greenfoilnature protects the urns from moisture during burial and decomposes without leaving any residue in the soil.
The untreated wood of the urn shells comes from Bavarian forests and is carefully and precisely turned in a Franconian family business.
The pulp is carefully molded by hand onto a wooden form. This gives each urn its own unique structure and surface. Natural pigments, such as collected earth, charcoal, sand, or stones, determine the coloring and structure of each urn.

Urns of T'URN
Paper has accompanied Jessica Maria Toliver for many years as a visual artist and is far more than just a means to an end: It is a friend who reflects her, who can become soft in her hands, who, together with her, can stubbornly, demandingly or smoothly open a space within her innermost being. This is how Jessica describes the creative process that culminates in a work of art, an urn.
When making the urns, Jessica mixes various pigments into the pulp, which then becomes the lid of the urn. Each urn thus becomes a unique piece with a unique color and structure. Jessica often asks the people who come to her to create their own urn in a workshop with the artist: "What color is the essence of your life?"
Urns from T'URN are objects that can embody the essence of a life. They can contain love letters, fibers from a favorite piece of clothing, or simply soil from a beloved garden. Feel free to contact us at bestellung@urnen-studio.de if you are interested in a workshop, and we will put you in touch with Jessica. The workshops take place in the artist's studio in Schwerte.

Opening of the T'URN
The urn lid is placed on the wooden bowl and can be easily removed before filling with the ash capsule or an ash bag. After filling, the lid and bowl are selectively glued together so that the urn cannot be easily opened again.

Who is behind T'URN?
In a very honest conversation with Jessica, we learned how she came to design an urn: For her, it all started with the realization that she wanted to create something truly authentic. She put all her artistic experience with paper into the balance and created a form that is both simple and special.
She has big plans for her urn label T'URN. She tells us all about it in the interview, which you can read in our blog post.
